Jumping from SC04 to SC06? Mind the Gap First

What actually separates SC04 and SC06

SC04 is about doing standard question types fluently and correctly — usually a direct one- or two-step application. SC06 questions are longer and routinely stitch two or three chapters together: one question might use differentiation to find a maximum, substitute back into the original function, then discuss what it means geometrically. In other words, SC04 tests "can you do this method"; SC06 tests "do you know which method applies here, and how the methods connect." Jumping straight across, the real shock is not that any single topic is hard — it is that the chain of reasoning got longer.

What SC05 bridges

SC05 and SC06 overlap by about 60% of the syllabus. SC05 takes several topics that SC04 only touches and develops them fully: properties of functions and graph transformations, derivation of trig identities, the rules for indices and logarithms, and a first look at differentiation. If SC06 is your goal, getting these solid in SC05 lays half of the SC06 foundation in advance. Skipping SC05 is possible, but then you have to fill this stretch yourself.

Three prerequisites to shore up first

Whether or not you take SC05, have no blind spots in these three before starting SC06: • Functions and graphs: domain, range, composite functions, translations and stretches. Many SC06 questions assume you can read a graph fluently. • Trig identities: Pythagorean, double angle, compound angle — memorised and usable. Almost every SC06 trig question starts with simplification. • Algebraic fluency: factorising, common denominators, handling fractional equations — fast and accurate. SC06 questions have many steps; slow or shaky algebra and everything downstream collapses.

A four-week catch-up plan

Week 1: functions and graph transformations, a few a day, drilling both directions — "write the function for this transformation" and "sketch the graph of this function." Week 2: trig identities — write out every core identity from memory first, then do simplification and proofs. Week 3: index and logarithm work, plus the basic rules of differentiation (power, sum, product, quotient, chain). Week 4: SC06 combined structured questions, specifically the cross-chapter ones, practising "which method does this call for."
